What’s Actually in ‘Eco-Friendly’ Feed Packaging (And What Isn’t)

Nowadays you’d find the word “eco-friendly” printed on almost every other bag you see. Though it may sound assuring, but the word almost carries no legal weight on itself.

“Eco-friendly,” “green,” and “sustainable” are not regulated technical terms. They are mostly marketing language brands use. Industry analysis describes such labels as “heartwarming and hazy,” communicating good intentions without specifying what, exactly, is environmentally better, or by how much (Packaging Strategies, 2025).

The scale of this problem is not small as a 2024 European Commission review found that over 53% of green claims made across products were vague, misleading, or entirely unsubstantiated. Packaging that leans on nature imagery like leaves, earthy colours, recycling arrows can also create an impression of sustainability that the underlying material never earns.

What Most Feed Bags Are Made Of

The overwhelming majority of cattle, poultry, and fish feed bags are woven polypropylene (PP) or BOPP-laminated plastic, chosen for tear resistance, moisture protection, and low cost (Southern Packaging, 2025).

Polypropylene is a petroleum-derived plastic that behaves like any conventional plastic in the environment. It does not compost, and it persists for years. Yet in the same commercial listings where these PP and PP-laminated feed bags are sold, some are marketed with feature tags including “Biodegradable” and “Eco-Friendly” printed directly alongside “Material: PP” (Exporters India, n.d.).

That contradiction, sitting in plain sight on ordinary supplier listings, is exactly the kind of gap researchers mean when they describe packaging claims as unsubstantiated.

Biodegradable, Compostable, Bio-Based Are Not the Same

Part of the confusion is genuine, not just marketing.

“Biodegradable” technically applies to almost everything on Earth, including plastic but the real question is how long it takes to biodegrade. As one industry explainer puts it, wood is biodegradable, but a log cabin can stand for generations.

“Compostable” is a stricter, testable claim. Under the ASTM D6400 standard, a genuinely compostable material must convert at least 90% of its organic carbon into carbon dioxide within 180 days in an industrial composting environment, and leave no toxic residue behind (Bio-Plastobag, 2026).

In India, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) certification is the equivalent non-negotiable benchmark and without a valid CPCB registration number, a compostability claim has no independent backing.

Myth vs. Fact

“If a feed bag says biodegradable, it will break down safely wherever it ends up.”

Not necessarily.

Without third-party certification (CPCB in India, or ASTM D6400/BPI internationally), “biodegradable” is an unverified claim, not a tested outcome and some materials marketed this way are conventional PP plastic that will not compost at all (Bio-Plastobag, 2026; Exporters India, n.d.).

“Eco-friendly” on a feed bag is not proof of anything by itself, instead it is an invitation to ask what the material actually is, and whether that claim has been independently tested. The next time a bag promises to be green, the label to look for is not a leaf icon, but a certification number: CPCB in India, or ASTM D6400/BPI internationally.

Everything else is just ink on plastic.
